Concept – Competition
Design Year: 2011
Institute: New Jersey Institute of Technology
Responsibilities: Student Project
Primary Applications Used: Autodesk Revit 2010
“I recall focusing on simplicity of a compact footprint, while utilizing additive and subtractive abstract forms to provide subtle unique features.”
Summary of Work: Habitat for Humanity is widely known for providing homes for underserved communities. Our students were tasked with creating a ‘real’ design for the first time, that took cost into account. There were multiple sites, so creating a concept that could work on all lots was critical.
Client Needs:
- Staying under a reasonable buildable budget
- Cost Estimate
- Material awareness
Project Challenges:
- First exposure to considering financial limitations
- Using design that works in all site conditions
- Considering maintenance and monthly costs
1. Building Section: Attempting to create functional spaces out of every inch of square footage.
“Looking back on this project, there are so many things that I would have done differently. However, it is often good to remind myself how much I’ve grown…”
2. Site Plan: Compact square design made fitting this into a standard lot and providing plenty of yard space was my aim. The neighborhood lacked yard space for children to play.
